History of St. Elisabeth's Church

Sir William Houldsworth and St. Elisabeth's Church

Sir William Houldsworth commissioned Alfred Waterhouse to design St Elisabeth's, which was built between 1881 and 1883.

The finest craftsman and artists were engaged, including Frederick Shields and Taylor of Loughborough, who worked on the windows and the church bells respectively.

Granite columns were brought to Reddish by narrowboat, and transported from the mill’s canal wharf on carts drawn by elephants borrowed from Manchester’s Belle Vue Zoo.
