History of Houldsworth Mill

Houldsworth Mill workers

Houldsworth Mill, designed by Stott & Sons, was built in the late 1860s and, as a great cotton mill of its time, was the primary source of employment in the area.

Houldsworth Mill commenced its conversion into a Business and Arts Centre in 1995 with £10 million European funding.  The imposing 40,000 sq m Grade 2* listed building was transformed and soon housed 70 affordable residential units, a leisure centre, Kingfisher Health Club, with 2000 members, a children's nursery, Whale-a-Round, an indoor play centre and nearly 100,000 sq ft of commercial floorspace.

The Engine House at Houldsworth Mill has planning permission for a mix of office and community uses. A bid submission is in progress by the Reddish Buildings Preservation Trust to secure the funding to bring the scheme to fruition.
